Lobos Complete a Successful Day at the Texas Tech Matador Qualifier
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. The University of New Mexico sent 20 athletes to the Texas Tech Matador Qualifier in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday. Of the 20 athletes, the Lobos came away with 15 top-5 finishes, including three first-place finishes.
The three first-place finishes came from freshman Matthew Larkin in the Men’s 800m (1:52.22), senior Ada’ora Chigbo in the Women’s High Jump, and senior Steffi Jones in the Women’s Mile (4:54.04).
Also running the Women’s Mile with Jones was freshman Isabella Fauria who finished in second at a time of 4:58.28.
In a similar style, alongside Larkin in the 800m, Gavin Sleeter finished in second place with a time of 1:54.09. This race was Larkin’s collegiate debut with the Lobos. ....

The Naples Philharmonic s first classical orchestral concert since roughly a year ago was a robust welcome to the ears.
Still, its Friday night performance had the look of a rehearsal before the last vanload of musicians had arrived.
A smaller orchestra appeared, with what looked like 6 feet of space between each musician, and without the traditional risers for its wind and percussion section.
It left us longing to see the horn section and woodwinds, which are big stars in the Mendelssohn Italian Symphony. Without plexiglass partitions, the wind instruments, we suspect, would have been directionally spraying human vapor into the string section. During a vapor-spread pandemic, that s dangerous stuff. ....
