Consultant will review financing for proposed $28M Sevier Center replacement

With a firm submitting an almost $28 million proposal to build new housing for residents of the John Sevier Center, Johnson City officials are doing their due diligence before committing to the project, which would still be at least a few years down the line.
The Johnson City Development Authority on Wednesday approved a contract with the National Development Council, a New York nonprofit, to review the financial model for the development plan.
LHP Capital, a real estate development firm in Knoxville, submitted plans to construct about 145 units of housing for seniors and residents with disabilities. LHP also serves as the property management company for the John Sevier Center and took over day-to-day operations in April. The company would eventually own the new housing if itâs allowed to finance and build it. ....

Rep. Al Lawson: Rodents 'unacceptable' at Jacksonville apartment

U.S. Rep. Al Lawson became the second member of Congress in a week to call out rodent-plagued, federally subsidized apartments in Jacksonville when he said Thursday residents of Hilltop Village Apartments should be relocated until exterminators can clear out infestations.
“It is inacceptable that young mothers who live in the units and are working to raise healthy children are forced to put their food in airtight containers so disease-carrying rodents cannot disrupt their child’s development,” Lawson, D-Tallahassee, said in a statement.
Lawson s criticism comes on the heels of U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio taking aim over the past week at conditions at Hilltop Village and two other Jacksonville apartment complexes, Eastside Terrace and Eastside Gardens, after his congressional staff toured them and talked with residents. ....
