RIPTON The Vermont State Board of Education (SBE) on Wednesday approved, by an 8-0 vote, Ripton’s request to withdraw from the Addison Central School District.
The panel, by an identical vote, also agreed to the Addison Central School District’s request that it remain a school district and not revert to a supervisory union in wake of Ripton’s departure.
The SBE’s decision means Ripton can move forward with re-forming a local school board to take on much of the heavy lifting that will be required for the community to become an independent district, serving its younger kids at Ripton Elementary School while tuitioning its older students to Middlebury Union middle and high schools, among other options.
RIPTON Ripton’s bid to withdraw from the Addison Central School District will again take center stage before the Vermont State Board of Education (SBE) next Wednesday, May 19.

MIDDLEBURY Emily Taylor Andrews Leeds, of Middlebury, Vt., died peacefully on March 2, 2021, following a mercifully short battle with cancer.
Emily loved being active outdoors and sharing her love of nature and animals. She was a ski instructor at Catamount, Otis Ridge and Butternut ski areas in Massachusetts; Keystone and Berthoud Pass ski areas in Colorado; and the Middlebury College Snow Bowl in Vermont. Emily spent more than 30 years helping new skiers find balance, confidence, and fun on the boards. For many years Emily shared her love of horses with new riders, giving horseback riding lessons to both children and adults at Cobble Hill Farm in Middlebury. Her love of animals included too many four-leggeds to list, but most recently included her dear sweet Sammie, the black lab who was never far from her side at Eastview at Middlebury.

This idea that (Ripton Elementary School) is worth ‘saving’ at any cost is elitist. When our taxes go up, how will our low-income neighbors afford to live here? Ripton residents Heather and Joe Durante
RIPTON You’ll forgive Ripton residents this year for being more preoccupied by their neighbors’ town meeting results than their own.
That’s because residents in Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Salisbury, Shoreham and Weybridge on March 2 will decide whether to endorse Ripton’s bid to withdraw from the Addison Central School District. Ripton residents in an effort to preserve their local school, which has been targeted for closure due to low enrollment voted 163-107 on Jan. 12 to leave the ACSD and become an independent school district.
