Tier 3 coronavirus curbs to cover almost 40 million from Saturday

More than two-thirds of England’s population will be living under Tier 3 restrictions from Saturday amid rising concern about the spread of coronavirus in the run-up to Christmas.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock placed large parts of southern and eastern England into the top tier and dashed hopes in northern regions of an easing of restrictions.
Mr Hancock told MPs he regretted having to impose the curbs but “there is a strong view right across Government that these actions are necessary”.
Under Tier 3 conditions pubs and restaurants can only offer takeaway or delivery services and indoor entertainment venues are shut.
Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Peterborough,  Hertfordshire, Surrey (with the exception of Waverley), Hastings and Rother (on the Kent border of East Sussex), and Portsmouth, Gosport and Havant in Hampshire will all move into Tier 3. ....

A total of 38 million people across England will soon be living under tier 3 Covid rules, after the health secretary, Matt Hancock, announced more parts of the country would have to move into the “very high” measures from Saturday.
The changes mean 68 per cent of England’s population will live in toughest tier areas, where pubs and restaurants are shut – except for takeaways – and cinemas and other leisure facilities are also closed.
Around 5 million of those live in areas newly added to tier 3: Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Peterborough, the whole of Hertfordshire, Surrey with the exception of Waverley, Hastings and Rother in East Sussex, and Portsmouth, Gosport and Havant in Hampshire. ....

The areas that have been pushed into Tier 3 have steadily grown since the last lockdown
A third national lockdown will be considered if coronavirus infections continue to rise after Christmas, Downing Street has suggested.
More than 38 million people in England – 68 per cent of the population – will be in Tier 3 from Saturday after large parts of the South East were plunged into the harshest level of restrictions by ministers.
Tory MPs in some of the new Tier 3 areas branded the decision “ridiculous”, but Matt Hancock, the Health Secretary, said he was left with no choice after infection rates surged by up to two thirds in some areas. ....

More than two-thirds of England faces winter under the toughest level of coronavirus restrictions after large sections of the south and east were put into tier 3, prompting anguish from local leaders.
Mayors and MPs from the north expressed disappointment after none of their regions were moved down, with some complaining they were being unfairly treated.
However, some public health chiefs took a different view, with one expressing dismay that Herefordshire had been shifted to the least stringent measures. Asked if she was pleased about the move to tier 1, Rebecca Howell-Jones, acting director of public health in Herefordshire, said: “From a public health perspective, I would have to say no, we are disappointed by this news.” ....
