People are paying even more now for gas and electric in a winter that is already shaping up to be much harsher than the one in 2019-20.

Until this past month, Shannan Phillips Hunt had never seen an electric bill so high.
“Our electric bill was $245 this past month for a pretty small home. It was a crazy increase (because) we’ve never used that much electric before,” Hunt, a resident of Holland Township, said.
Hunt shares the 1,390-square-foot home with her husband and two dogs. Pre-pandemic, her electricity costs generally amounted to $150 in the wintertime.
