Mysterious Forest Fires Engulf Margalla Hills Again
At least three fires broke out in the hills on Friday, following another fire on Wednesday.
These hazards are affecting the local ecosystem by destroying the flora and threatening the fauna.
The Margalla Hills are spread over 12,605 hectares and have been affected by a large number of fires every year, which the CDA and the IWMB have been unable to control.
“There is a need for a proper investigation to know what are the reasons behind the frequent fires though a fire could be a natural phenomenon and a result of human activity,” a CDA official remarked. ....

ISLAMABAD: Environmentally hazardous practices in the Margalla Hills National Park (MNHP), including smoking, BBQ-ing and littering, have been outlawed in order to protect the diverse wildlife area.
According to a fresh notification, the capital police will now assist the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) in enforcing the environmental laws.
“The police will now patrol the park along with the wildlife staff and fine visitors for littering,” said IWMB Chairperson Rina Saeed Khan.
Cutting of trees and encroachment has also been banned, the notification said, adding: “Violators can be arrested for a month and a fine can be imposed through a summary trial. Act as responsible citizens by following law.” ....

ISLAMABAD: British High Commissioner Dr Christian Turner on Friday cleaned up a hiking trail after visitors left their trash behind.
“Another Friday morning walk another two bags of litter. Safaai nisf imaan hai,” Dr Turner tweeted with a picture of himself with two bags of trash that he had collected and hashtagged Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Hamza Shafqaat and Clean Green Pakistan.
His effort was appreciated by celebrities and people from all walks of life. Former cricket star and sports commentator, Wasim Akram, responded saying, “Now this is really embarrassing. Where are we heading? And thanks Mr Turner for doing this almost every week.” ....
