CROWN POINT â The city is putting the pedal to the metal when it comes to expanding its bike trails.Â
During a Wednesday meeting, the Crown Point Board of Works opened bids for the first phase of its Next Level Trails project.
Earlier this year, the city was awarded $2.98 million through Indiana s Next Level Trails grant program to complete a regional project to expand the Pennsy Greenway, as well as the start of the Veterans Memorial Trail.

Crown Point Chief of Staff Greg Falkowski said the first phase of the project is to expand the Veterans Memorial Trail from North Street through the Crown Point Sportsplex to 113th Avenue.Â
CROWN POINTÂ â The Board of Public Works accepted two bids Wednesday for the final leg of the cityâs portion of the 109th Avenue expansion project.
The apparent low bidder on the project, pending review of its documentation, is Rieth-Riley Construction Co. The Gary firm bid $1,097,489.59. The other bidder was Milestone Contractors North Inc. of Griffith, which quoted $1,127,516.77 on the project.
Speaking after the special meeting, Mayor David Uran explained that this final leg of the project covers 109th Avenue from Delaware Parkway eastbound to the Indiana Department of Transportation interchange at I-65. The project, to be completed this year, expands the roadway to a four-lane boulevard.
Rieth-Riley Construction Co. in Gary won a national award for its work on the Indiana Toll Road.
The National Asphalt Pavement Association, a Maryland-based trade association for the construction industry, awarded Rieth-Riley a 2020 Quality in Construction Award for excellence in the construction of asphalt pavement.
The honor recognized Rieth-Riley s work on the Indiana Toll Road in Hammond last year. As part of the PUSH 2.0 project, the construction firm milled, treated and repaved 86 lane miles on the toll road that runs through northern Indiana from Illinois to Ohio.Â
Rieth-Riley worked in spring and fall on the design/build project, which also included 11 on-ramps and 16 bridges.
