A TEACHER has been selected to fight a vacant council seat. Veteran councillor Phil Stone is backing Barrie Hall, a teacher at Richard Huish College, to replace him on Somerset West and Taunton Council. Mr Hall, who works at Richard Huish College, is standing in the by-election in North Curry and Ruishton, which Mr Stone represented for 34 years until he recently stepped down. On being selected by local members yesterday (Monday), Mr Hall said: Phil Stone’s work for our villages is legendary. I am proud to have been in the team with Phil in the past and am honoured he has chosen to support me to become the candidate. ....

A CROWD of almost 10,000 people cheered and waved Union flags as Princess Diana arrived in Taunton, this week in April 1991. The Princess stepped out of a green Jaguar to greet the well-wishers at 1.30pm, having previously visited the newly-opened Sedgemoor Splash pool in Bridgwater, and the Six Acres Day Centre in Roman Road, Taunton. She was introduced to the Mayor and Mayoress of Taunton, Peter and Annette Lee, council chief executive Peter Berman and his wife Anne, and Taunton MP David Nicholson and his wife Frances, too. The first member of the public she spoke to on her walkabout was four-year-old Oliver Forster-Burnell, from Bishops Lydeard, at the north end of the High Street. ....
A TAUNTON vicar who took up his post in January will meet his congregation for the first time tomorrow (Friday). The Good Friday service at St George s, Wilton, will mark the first time the Rev Dr Nick Griffin comes face to face with worshippers. His appointment to St George s just over two months ago marked a return to the town he grew up in. The Rev Dr Griffin, 36, who is married with two children, was educated in the county town at Bishop Henderson and Bishop Fox s schools and Richard Huish College. He said: I love the town and my wife is local as well. ....
