The former taxi driver told Isle of Wight Radio he can t do the full 80 miles in one go because of his health. Instead, inspired by Captain Tom, Richard will do laps around his estate in Sutton Close, Ryde. ....
By Steve Flowers As is my annual ritual, my year-end column pays tribute to Alabama political legends who have passed away during the year. Sonny Cauthen passed away in Montgomery at age 70. He was the ultimate inside man in Alabama politics. Sonny was a lobbyist before lobbying was a business. He kept his cards close to his vest, and you never knew what he was doing. Sonny was the ultimate optimist who knew what needed to be achieved and found like-minded allies with whom to work. When he had something to get done, he bulldozed ahead and achieved his mission. Sonny was a yellow dog Democrat who believed in equal treatment and rewarding hard work. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter and mentored a good many young men in Montgomery. ....
Former Alabama lawmakers Richard Laird, Jack Page die after contracting COVID-19 Updated Dec 16, 2020; Two former longtime members of the Alabama House of Representatives died Monday after contracting COVID-19. Former Rep. Richard Laird of Roanoke died at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga., after battling the virus for more than a month. Laird, 81, served in the House from 1978 until 2014. The Randolph Leader reported Laird’s death. Former Rep. Jack Page of Gadsden, 70, died in a Gadsden hospital on Monday. Page had been in poor health since surgery in June, The Gadsden Times reported. Page’s former wife, Rebecca Gray Page, told the Gadsden Times that Page had recently contracted the coronavirus. Page was elected to the House in 1993 and served until 2010. ....
Former State Rep. Richard Laird died Monday afternoon at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga. He represented Randolph, Clay and Chambers counties in Montgomery for 36 years from 1978 to 2014. He was named by his peers as one of the top 15 members of the Alabama House of Representatives for six years and was the recipient of the Governorâs Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. When he announced his intenÂtion not to run for re-election, he told The Leader, âGod tells us we donât have that many years left. We want to be able to take a few trips without looking over our shoulder . I really, really enjoyed representÂing the people all these years.â ....
