The Maine CDC reports 417 new cases of COVID-19 statewide and another 23 people, diagnosed with the virus, who have died. State health officials say 21 of the 23 deceased were confirmed through a review of vital records filed in the past two weeks, and actually died between December 21st and January 26th.
A new agreement between Hancock County Sheriff Scott Kane and Healthy Acadia will bring substance abuse recovery coaches back to the jail. Sheriff Kane had canceled the service after the organization expressed support for Black Lives Matter on social media, stating that the movement s penchant toward violence against law enforcement was concerning. ....

Third in a Series: Advocates Uncertain as Politics Comes Into Focus

My two previous reports in this series showed that companies and a union who could benefit directly from various DOT grants made highly favorable statements about Pete Buttigieg. That means little on its face, because the statements came from entities who could say little else. Advocates for the riders on Amtrak and transit are not bound by that constraint, and they have endured other DOT heads who have not been particularly favorable to the riders who are their constituents. I will conclude this series by reporting some comments from those advocates, examining Buttigieg’s political future, and proffering some suggestions about how he can help the riders (assuming that the Senate confirms his nomination). ....

MBTA Board Softens Blow, But Service Cuts Still Coming

MBTA calls its service-reduction plan “Forging Ahead,” which “Reduces service frequency, Preserves more access and hours of operation, and Avoids some service changes that would have required customers switch modes.”
Transit riders throughout the country are facing severe service cuts, as ridership and revenue remain low, and state and local governments face severe financial woes. Earlier this month, Railway Age reported that Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA, known locally as the “T”) announced a lengthy litany of services to be slashed. The Fiscal & Management Control Board (FMCB), which is acting as the Board for the Boston agency these days, has now finalized and approved the cuts by a 3-2 vote. ....

Carl Anderson on Sunday Night Jazz Showcase

An expressive and versatile vocalist, Carl Anderson worked in theatrical productions and recorded soul, pop, rock, and fusion dates.
He was born in Lynchburg, VA, and moved to Washington in 1969. Anderson sang with the rock band Second Eagle before relocating to Los Angeles in the early 70s and joining Motown in 1971.
While working with Stevie Wonder on some songs that were never issued, Anderson began acting. He was in both the film and stage productions of Jesus Christ Superstar during the early and mid- 70s, and also made appearances in several L.A. clubs. ....
