The University of Alaska Fairbanks has been conducting a study to determine which varieties of vegetables will grow best in Interior Alaska.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) agricultural department has been testing which vegetables grow best in Interior Alaska.
According to Glenna Gannon, Assistant Professor of Sustainable Food Systems for UAF, the trials have been going for several years. “We have been trialing a number of different crops, as well as several cultivars of each of those crops since 2017. This year in 2021 we are trialing bush beans, beets, corn, carrots, fennel, brussels sprouts, sweet corn, hot peppers, and winter squash - and of each of those, we’re trialing anywhere from five to 14 different varieties. The Fairbanks North Star Borough has enacted a multi-step plan to improve and preserve Pioneer Park.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks North Star Borough is enacting a master plan for the future of Pioneer Park.
According to Donnie Hayes, Riverside Superintendent for the Fairbanks North Star Borough, the master plan covers various aspects to improve and preserve Pioneer Park. “Pioneer Park is just over 50 years old, and so it’s just a moment for us to be able to look at the options that we have for the park - but also more importantly to look at the future of the park. FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - With wildfire season still in effect, the Department of Fish and Game is offering some insight on how wildfires affect wildlife in the Interior.
According to Tom Paragi, a Wildlife Biologist with the Fairbanks Department of Fish and Game, fires can be either be beneficial or devastating depending on the conditions. “The main effect of fire is on the vegetation that the animals use for their habitat. Some people have a perception that fire is bad or it kills off the forest, but it’s a natural part of disturbance. The State of Alaska was awarded a $4 million grant to expand apprenticeships programs in the state.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The United States Department of Labor has awarded the State of Alaska with a $4 million grant to expand apprenticeship programs in the state.
According to Anne Velardi, Apprenticeship Coordinator with the Alaska Department of Labor, the grant will be used to expand apprenticeship opportunities in Alaska, especially for underserved populations. “Our underserved populations could be rural people, it can be women, it can be people from various ethnic groups, it could be young people - many different ways to define that. But basically what we’re trying to do and what the federal government is trying to do is expand those opportunities and apprenticeships to as many people as possible.” ....

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19 may be cause for concern for those not vaccinated.
On Friday, June 25th, the World Health Organizations released a statement urging those vaccinated to continue wearing masks to stop the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19 and as of now, the CDC has yet to release a statement on the matter.
