Post Independent Editorial Board Another Glenwood Springs City Council election has passed, but we doubt about two-thirds of Glenwood residents even noticed certainly not based on the pathetic 31% turnout in balloting that concluded April 6. Poor turnout has become the norm for Glenwood’s city elections held the first Tuesday of April in odd-numbered years, per the city charter. It’s true when there’s only one contested city council race to decide, as was the case this spring. Out of 6,012 registered voters in the city who received ballots for the election, just 1,854 ballots were returned. It’s also been true when there’s a contentious tax question on the ballot, as was the case in April 2019 when voters shot down a major streets tax proposal, and had two contested city council races to decide. ....
Vaccine clinic thanks A big thank-you to Garfield County Public Health staff for running an excellent and efficient COVID-19 vaccine clinic at Garfield County Fairgrounds in Rifle on March 19. Everything was very well thought out and organized so that people coming in for vaccine shots did not have to wait long. From the administrative staff who helped people with their paperwork to the medical professionals that administered the vaccine, they were supportive and professional and did it all with a smile on their face. It was great to be part of this team effort to help people get vaccinated. Gina Waller ....
Mayor, Wussow win unopposed Shelley Kaup retained her seat on the Glenwood Springs City Council, winning the at-large seat with 1,233 votes. Challenger Ricky Rodriguez received 605 votes in Tuesday’s city council election. This will be Kaup’s second consecutive term, having served from 2007 through 2011, then being reelected in 2017. “I’m so excited. I’m so humbled and honored by the vote. It really just pleases me and I look forward to working with the public,” Kaup said Tuesday night. Kaup said her challenger ran a good, clean campaign and she was thankful he decided to run against her. The Post Independent reached out to Rodriguez, who did not respond before the deadline. ....
That was one of the topics discussed by candidates during Monday evening’s virtual candidate forum. Kaup’s seat is the one contested in the April 6 city election. Ward 5 representative Jonathan Godes and Ward 2 representative Ingrid Wussow are up for reelection but face no challengers on the ballot. “I think the cost of housing is off the charts,” Kaup said when asked what change she wants to see happen. Kaup noted how prices have only increased while supply has gotten tighter in the city’s housing market. Kaup said she wants to find ways to encourage affordable housing to at least ensure the city’s workforce has a place to live in Glenwood Springs. ....
