On Dec. 23, The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania opened applications for its 15th annual Bob Fryer Memorial Scholarship. Named after Bob Fryer, long-time editor of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review who passed away in 2011, the purpose of the scholarship is to encourage students who are as passionate about journalism as he was. For Bob, journalism was his life, Luis Fabregas, an investigative reporter, said when asked about Fryer by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The newsroom was his life. In order to qualify for the scholarship, students must be residents of one of the 29 counties of Western Pennsylvania; however, they do not have to attend college in the area. When Ellie Hartleb was awarded the scholarship in 2017, she attended the American University in Washington D.C. However, she was still eligible due to her primary residence being in Erie. ....
