As trucks drive into the lot near Michigan and Lincoln Memorial, they mark the start to construction that has been a long time coming for developer Rick Barrett.
Good things take time and from my perspective, this has been a very good thing, said Barrett.

Crews ceremoniously began construction work Tuesday morning on what will become the tallest residential tower in Wisconsin.The Couture will be built at East Michigan Street and North Lincoln Memorial Drive in Milwaukee.The 44-story building will be home to 322 luxury apartments when completed, as well as retail space and a transit system connection. It s going to be a very dynamic building because it also has a transit hub, which includes a street car and the bus rapid transit line, developer Rick Barrett said.The project has been in the works for nearly a decade.Barrett bought the site four years ago, but setbacks and the pandemic slowed the process. We had a full team of investors set up right when the pandemic hit and basically once that hit, we threw all the cards up on the table and had to find new investors, he said.The federal government stepped in with a $104.7 million loan to get the project going. MILWAUKEE (WDJT) A new skyscraper and transit plaza will soon be near Milwaukee’s lakefront. After nine years, construction began on “The Couture” Tuesday, May 11, right across from the Summerfest grounds.
It’ll be about three years before all of the high-rise is complete. One of the developers called it a monumental day.

The Couture, a $191 million, 44-story, 322-unit apartment tower that connects the Milwaukee lakefront with downtown through public plazas and pedestrian bridges. The Couture is being developed by Barrett Lo Visionary Development (BLVD). It will include 42,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space and will be a hub for the Milwaukee Streetcar. JLL is the MAP lender on the transaction and the equity placement assignment was arranged by Baird.
