Silver Medal Recipient, Honorary Alum Ross Roeder Remembered Ross Roeder, a Michigan Tech Board of Trustees Silver Medal recipient and an Alumni Association Honorary Alumnus, passed away May 11 in St. Petersburg, Florida, after being injured in a car accident. He was 83. Roeder was a charter member of the McNair Society of planned givers and a past president and life trustee of the Michigan Tech Fund. He served on the National Advisory Board of the School of Business and Economics from 1996 to 2009 and was a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council of the College of Business (COB) for many years. ....

Together, we have made tremendous sacrifices in the way we work and live in response to the pandemic. Over the past year, we have proven that we can create a healthy and safe on-campus experience for our students, faculty, and staff, and that we can adapt in response to rapidly changing environments. We have also learned that technology alone cannot replace the experiential learning that happens in classrooms, labs, residence halls, and beyond. This, coupled with the promising news of a nationwide COVID-19 vaccine program, gives us the impetus to resume normal operations once those in our campus community become eligible for vaccination. ....

The issue at Michigan Technological University in Houghton was sparked in recent weeks after a white professor demanded an apology for a faculty resolution condemning hate speech, racism and white supremacy. Dr. Jeffrey Burl, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, wrote a letter in response, which said he has been discriminated against as a white man for 40 years. ....

There was no formal commencement ceremony this year, but Michigan Technological University still tried to make mid-year graduation special. More than 350 undergraduates and almost 330 graduate students were recognized on Saturday, according to a press release from MTU. Three ROTC cadets were commissioned as offers into the Air Force, and eight into the Army.
