APD working to add more detectives to homicide unit

Created: May 07, 2021 03:07 PM
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The Albuquerque Police Department is trying to get a better understanding of what s behind the city s increased homicide count.
In 2021, there have been 42 victims and 10 people have been charged.
2021 is trending higher though, absolutely, we re not in denial of what that is, said Kyle Hartsock, APD deputy commander. Something we re already trying to do is increase the homicide unit up to 16 full time detectives. That process doesn t happen overnight.
Hartsock said the homicide unit currently has 10 officers that are operational. The others are still in training.
So we re looking at each of those guys with about 4 cases, said Sgt. Rick Ingram. Some of them vary quite a bit, and we re in month 5, so we expect that to go up as the year goes on. ....

Iraq war vet to spur Democratic primary for Madison Cawthorn House seat

The candidacy announcement by an Iraq war vet has made a Democratic primary a near-certainty for North Carolina s 11th District House seat held by Republican Madison Cawthorn.
Josh Remillard, a 38-year-old veteran of two combat tours in Iraq now living in Mills River, said he will compete for the district that covers most of Western North Carolina. Remillard was a candidate in 2020 for North Carolina state House 117 District.
I served in the Army for eight years, including two combat tours; I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and do the hard work of strengthening our economy, fixing a broken health-care system, and improving our kids’ education, Remillard said in a March 10 release. ....

From the beginning, the family of Andres Loera felt a disconnect from the Albuquerque Police Department.
Loera was fatally shot on Feb. 13, 2020, and the case sat unsolved for months until, in October, APD handed it over to the 2nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
During the APD investigation, Joseline Loera, the victim’s sister, said the family had “no communication” from police. After a month of silence, the family demanded a meeting with then-APD Chief Michael Geier, Homicide Unit Sgt. Rick Ingram and the detective.

She said every question was met with “it’s under investigation” but APD apologized for the lack of communication. They promised to do better, but Joseline Loera said her family heard nothing from July to November. ....

Michelle Phillips had just left work on Jan. 5, 2020, when her phone rang.
A woman frantically told her that her son Thomas Gonzales had been shot outside his home. Before Phillips could ask any questions, someone grabbed the phone, said, “Your son is dead,” and hung up.
......................
Someone in a passing vehicle had opened fire on Gonzales – shooting him multiple times – after an argument broke out.
“I was so numb for so long with so much pain and grief. That hasn’t eased,” Phillips told the Journal on Thursday. “… I have to pray every morning to get up and face the day. It’s as fresh today as the day it happened.” ....
