Scrounging up gift money when you might be out of work. And then, of course, thereâs still that pesky COVID-19 pandemic. We donât really need reminders as to why weâre under stress. And while minutiae of the holiday season is traditionally taxing given all we feel we need to squeeze in, 2020 has proven to be particularly challenging. Fortunately there is music. Though it might not be a cure-all to solve all woes, the uplifting tunes and the comforting tones that help define the holidays provide at least a temporary respite from the troubles of the day. In the spirit of the season, Iâm offering this list of personal holiday favorites. This is not intended as a definitive âbest ofâ list, the songs are not listed in any particular order of importance and the overwhelming majority are tied to Christmas (itâs hard to fight the onslaught from radio and the recording industry). Itâs just a list of songs I like, and I hope you do, as ....
Let your heart be light. Next year, all our troubles will be out of sight. Our hearts will not be light this Christmas. COVID-19 has stolen too many lives this year â without even counting the ones we lost too soon to other causes entirely. For too many, tomorrow never came. For too many, tomorrow will come, but without the person who makes it worth living through each day. And for so many of the rest of us, the tomorrows keep coming â but we donât know when weâll be able to spend them with the people we love. For many of us, there are no in-person holiday happy hours with coworkers or friends, no family dinners, no gift exchanges gathered around the tree, no ice skating dates followed by sips of hot cocoa. Our nieces and nephews wonât see us during this holiday season, and we hope their young memories of us are strong enough to last until the next time we can be together. Our grandparents wonât see us this year ....
By Ross K. Baker Radio stations that feature Christmas songs at this time of year will play many times and by many different artists a song from a popular film that premiered in 1944. “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” was sung by Judy Garland in the movie “Meet Me in St. Louis,” about a family forced to move from their beloved home in St. Louis by their father’s transfer to New York. Judy Garland sings the song to her younger sister, played by Margaret O’Brien, to comfort her about the impending move. Unlike most Christmas sings that are cheery but emotionally shallow, this song captures the pain and sacrifice that so many American families were enduring in that dreadful winter of 1944 although the war itself is not mentioned. It is a song uniquely suited to Christmas 2020, overshadowed like Christmas 1944 by death and grief and uncertainty. ....

Someday soon we all will be together. By Jessica MasonDec 16th, 2020, 11:19 am There are many Christmas songs that are understandable classics. “White Christmas” captures both the magic of a snowy holiday and the longing for a simpler time and a home far away. “The Christmas Song” reminds us of holiday traditions, even when none of us have actually had chestnuts roasted on an open fire, many of us have looked to the sky for Santa. But I don’t think any Christmas song this year will hit quite as hard as another classic: “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Specifically, the original version as sung by Judy Garland in the 1944 classic, ....
