New data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that reported annual cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the United States continued to climb in 2019, reaching an all-time high for the sixth consecutive year.
The newly released 2019 STD Surveillance Report found:
2.5 million reported cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, the three most commonly reported STDs in 2019.

The sharpest increase was in cases of 
syphilis among newborns (i.e., congenital syphilis), which nearly quadrupled
 between 2015 and 2019.
“Less than 20 years ago, gonorrhea rates in the U.S. were at historic lows, syphilis was close to elimination, and advances in chlamydia diagnostics made it easier to detect infections,” said Raul Romaguera, DMD, MPH, acting director for CDC� ....

While most of world is focused on COVID-19, another public health issue needs attention. A study published in JAMA Network reported that culturally targeted HIV/STI interventions for Black women in community supervision programs are effective. Research found that recognizing the urgent health need is a part of reversing the concentration of HIV/STI and SUD (substance use disorder) epidemics among the noted population.
Louisa Gilbert, Ph.D., Dawn Goddard-Eckrich, Ed.D., and Mingway Chang, Ph.D. were listed among the many authors who conducted a randomized clinical trial to address this gap in culturally tailored interventions–since a dearth of HIV interventions designed for Black women in CSPs remains.
