Shirley Williams, Lady Williams of Crosby, who has died aged 90, was one of the most influential figures in British social democracy in the latter half of the 20th century. The former Labour cabinet minister who defected to co-found the Social Democratic Party, of which she then became president, later served as leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords after the merger between the SDP and the Liberal party. ....

Shirley Williams, one of the founders of the SDP, dies

S
HIRLEY WILLIAMS spent her life at the heart of the liberal establishment. Her mother, Vera Brittain, was a prominent feminist and author of the first world war classic “Testament of Youth”; her father, Sir George Catlin, was an academic political theorist and Labour party activist (some would say suck-up); guests at the family home in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, included T.S. Eliot, Jawaharlal Nehru and most of the leading Labour figures of the age. Ms Williams went on to marry two of the Anglo-Saxon world’s leading liberal intellectuals Bernard Williams, a fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and later provost of King’s College, Cambridge, and, after a long gap, Richard Neustadt, a Harvard professor and author of the classic “Presidential Power”. ....

First Thoughts: Shirley Williams, the SDP's lost leader, and what the Duke of Edinburgh knew

Shirley Williams, who has died aged 90, really was as nice as her popular image. I was a young reporter in the early 1970s when the
Observer sent me to report a Saturday speech of hers. Thanks to transport delays, I arrived late and, for my benefit alone, she more or less repeated the speech, reading for nearly 20 minutes from her scribbled notes and pausing to answer my questions while ignoring Labour aides pressing her to move to another engagement.
The contrast with Margaret Thatcher, for one of whose speeches I was also late, was striking. “Excuse me while I deal with the press for a moment,” Thatcher commanded Tory admirers clamouring for her attention. It was indeed a moment: Thatcher brusquely told me to consult a press officer. ....

Shirley Williams was a political pioneer, and with her death a curtain falls on a historic era
The late MP stood and spoke for three causes on which time has drawn a veil: Labour and the economy, education, and the SDP.
If you exclude the victories won by Tony Blair, which the Labour Party disavows, then its last significant electoral victory was in 1964. That year a brilliant young woman called Shirley Williams was elected to parliament for the first time, as the MP for Hitchin. On 12 April Williams died, aged 90, and with her death the curtain falls on an era of British politics. ....
