“I entered politics as a gentleman and want to leave as a gentleman,” Manuel Mallia declared in his parliamentary farewell speech. Mallia never learned that self-praise is no praise at all.

Police Day marked in Gozo

Police Day was commemorated at Santa Marija Cemetery chapel in Victoria, on July 15, with the celebration of Mass in memory of deceased members. The main celebrant was Diocesan vicar general Mgr Tarcisio Camilleri, assisted by Gozo Police Force chaplain Mgr Paul Cardona and Malta Police chaplain Fr Raymond Bonnici, OFM Cap.
Leading the congregation was police commissioner Angelo Gafà. Inspectors Charles Bernard Spiteri and Josef Gauci, superintendent Joseph Hersey, assistant police commissioner Stephen Gatt, deputy commissioner Ramon Mercieca and ex-superintendent Ray Zammit, representing the Association of Retired Police Officers (Malta), also attended.
After Mass, Mgr Camilleri blessed the police graves, followed by the laying of wreaths by police commissioner Gafà and sergeant Jonathan Vella on behalf of the Police Officers Union, among others. ....

Developer behind flats close to ancient Kalkara cart ruts wants more land

A developer behind plans to build a block of apartments on previously untouched land wants to extend his site into a buffer zone designed to protect ancient cart ruts.
The planning control application seeks to rezone the protected Kalkara land from its current status as a Rural Conservation Area, to allow it to be developed.
Last year, the Planning Authority approved the controversial application to develop 14 apartments, four maisonettes and a 10-car garage on Triq it-Turretta and Triq Patri Mattew Sultana.
An appeal funded by activists to overturn the decision was rejected by the Planning Tribunal in January.
Now the developer, Ray Zammit, wants to take up an additional 180 square metres of land. It serves as a buffer zone for cart ruts, mysterious deep grooves in the rock that date back thousands of years, which residents say were discovered during the construction of Triq it-Turretta in the 1990s. ....
