State Police respond to recent editorial | News, Sports, Jobs - Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:
Your April 28 editorial titled “State Police won’t issue regular scam warnings” was misleading and served as a cheap shot to the hard-working and dedicated members of the New York State Police, rather than an attempt to educate the public.
The State Police is a full-service police agency that investigates all types of reported crimes, from barking dog calls to prison breaks. We have several specialty units that are ready to respond when needed at a moment’s notice, including our Canine Unit, Special Operations Response Team, Underwater Recovery Team, Aviation, Violent Gang and Narcotic Enforcement Team, Mobile Field Unit and many more. We take pride in providing our resources to other law enforcement agencies when they are needed. ....

SUPERVISOR SPOTLIGHT: Jay Rand talks about issues facing town | News, Sports, Jobs

Jay Rand
LAKE PLACID As the town gets ready for the 2023 Winter World University Games, there are a number of issues facing the community, including short-term rentals, tourism, overuse of the High Peaks, the coronavirus pandemic and the state’s new law legalizing recreation marijuana use.
North Elba town Supervisor Jay Rand touched on some of those issues during an interview with Lake Placid News Editor Andy Flynn on Monday, April 12. Below is part of that interview.

LPN: What are some of the biggest issues facing Essex County right now?
Rand: I think a lot of it has been keeping up with the COVID issues this past year. Every day, (Board of Supervisors Chairman) Shaun Gillilland has been in communication with the state of New York and then passing the information on to us. We’ve really not been able to have a lot of face-to-face meetings. It’s all been Zoom. I think last week was the first one we’ve had for quite some time where we actually w ....

State Police won't issue regular scam warnings | News, Sports, Jobs - Adirondack Daily Enterprise

Editorial
On April 10, we wrote in this space about scams. We talked about how they have gotten more prevalent and dangerous including blackmail scams that recently drove two St. Lawrence County teenagers to suicide. We talked about how there are probably far more scam victims out there than anyone knows how we know some, and know what a crushing blow it was to their dignity and emotional stability. They don’t want to talk about it, and police have said there is nothing they can do to catch the crimnals.
Sadly, that is largely true. Many of these predators are operating from foreign countries. We look forward to a future with better international police cooperation where these crooks can be nabbed, but for now, at least, local cops are not really equipped to deal with this modern crime wave. ....

Most Tri-Lakes residents have been partially vaccinated | News, Sports, Jobs

[email protected]
SARANAC LAKE More than half of Tri-Lakes residents have been at least partially vaccinated, new state and county vaccine data shows.
This data from Franklin County Public Health and the state Immunization Information System, shared with the News on Friday, April 16, offers the first public glimpse at the progress of this historic vaccine rollout effort at the local level. It also sheds light on the number of locals who have chosen not to or have been unable to get vaccinated so far.
The data, which is broken down by ZIP code rather than by municipality, shows that more than half of residents living in the 12983 and 12946 ZIP codes Saranac Lake and Lake Placid have been at least partially vaccinated. Tupper Lake’s 12986 ZIP code has just below half of eligible people at least partially vaccinated. ....
