CHENNAI: About 300 conservancy workers gathered at the Ripon Building on Thursday, protesting the alleged dismissal of contract workers under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) scheme after privatisation of 11 of the 15 Corporation zones.
The protesting workers were later dispersed by the police. Waste collection and transportation in Thiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram and Ambattur zones had been handed to Ramky Enviro from February, while Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Adyar, Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones are handled by Urbaser SA Sumeet.
“I went to work on January 11, and was told that I’m no longer working there because many Corporation zones have been privatised and permanent corporation workers have to be accommodated. I have been jobless for seven months now,” said Palani (name changed), from Anna Nagar zone.

Unilever will launch recyclable toothpaste tubes in India and France – two of Unilever’s biggest oral care markets – as part of its bid to convert its entire global toothpaste portfolio to recyclable tubes by 2025.
This follows Hindustan Unilever’s (HUL) February announcement that it plans to collect and recycle 100% of its plastic waste – over 100,000 tonnes of plastic – from 2021 onwards.
“Recyclable tubes mark a key milestone in our packaging journey and, more significantly, they have the potential to transform the whole oral care industry. Together with our manufacturing partners, we’re making the new design available to any producers interested in adopting the new material, with the ambition to accelerate industry change,” Babu Cherian, R&D oral care packaging director.

American private equity giant KKR and its portfolio company Ramky Enviro Engineers, a top environmental solutions player based in Hyderabad, have revived plans to explore strategic options at a time when both corporates and investors are warming up to the ESG theme, sources with knowledge of the matter told Moneycontrol.
Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) refers to the three metrics for measuring the sustainability and societal impact of an investment in a company or business.
“The firm has invited a clutch of global and domestic investment bankers to make pitches in the next few days. They will evaluate either an IPO (initial public offering) or a stake sale by KKR. Both the options are on the table ,” one of the individuals above told Moneycontrol.
