Brexit is impacting on grain imports into Northern Ireland The Northern Ireland Grain Trade Association (NIGTA) is claiming that the new Brexit trade deal (Trade and Co-operation Agreement) will create a number of new challenges for feed compounders, specifically where grain imports from the rest of the UK are concerned. NIGTA chief executive Robin Irvine has confirmed that of the promised frictionless trade based on no tariffs, no customs and no inspections – only the removal of tariffs has been delivered. According to Irvine, the result is a unique and unpredictable outcome for Northern Ireland. He added: “The threat of a £90/t tariff on around half a million tonnes of wheat and barley from GB [Great Britain] would have severely impacted our livestock sector. ....

Senior male champion Rathregan Bonanza. For the last number of years the Irish Hereford Breed Society has held a very successful National Calf show in Tullamore, Co Offaly, but COVID-19 forced the calf show to move online this year. The online show attracted over 100 entries, with 17 animals entered in one of the classes, and went down as a huge success with breeders. This year’s judges were myself (Adam Woods), Robin Irvine (Graceland Herefords, NI) and Nigel Owens (international rugby referee and Hereford breeder, Wales). Commenting on the quality of stock on display, Owens said: “The animals were a credit to the breeders and some of the classes proved very hard to select a winner from. ....
