By Christian Larranaga Robertson High School For New Mexico athletes, the COVID-19 pandemic has created a new normal. Typically, student-athletes are surrounded by their teammates on and off the field or court, making lifelong memories and developing life skills. For the past ten months, all sporting events, including practices, have been canceled. Personally, I believe that this has had a huge impact on New Mexico athletes, and has left them with nothing to do during these times when they would normally be out developing friendships and key life skills they need. Currently, New Mexico athletes have been given the hope that they will still have a season this school year, even though it will be shorter than normal.
Independence High School had a lower graduation rate than Liberty Union High District s overall graduation rate at 53 percent, according to the California Department of Education. In comparison, Liberty Union High District had a graduation rate of 87.4 percent for the 2017-2018 school year. According to CDE data, graduation rates continue to indicate an increase in disproportional academic performance between white, Black, Latino, and English learner students. According to the National Centre for Education Statistics, in the 2017-2018 school year, of the 50 states where data was collected, students with disabilities were at the bottom of 4-year high school graduation rates by student group.
