School budget votes: Approvals up, but turn-out likely down

Tuesday was school budget vote day in New York state. According to Robert Schneider, executive director of the New York State School Boards Association, 99.2% of school district budgets passed, which was a slighter higher percentage than last year.
While NYSBBA doesn’t have complete totals yet, Schneider speculates that the turnout fell from last year because most voters in 2020 had utilized mail-in balloting due to the pandemic.

Capital Region voters approve school budgets, boards and propositions


CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. — On Tuesday, May 18, school districts across the Capital Region held votes on budgets and school board elections. According to the New York State School Boards Association, New York voters approved 99.2% of school district budgets.
We appreciate the many who turned out – in person or by absentee ballot – to approve local school budget proposals and elect school board members this year, NYSSBA Executive Director Robert Schneider stated.
The high passage rate for proposed budgets is a welcome endorsement of spending plans that will strengthen our educational programs and restore some of the academic and student support services that were curtailed by the pandemic, Schneider continued. ....

Philanthropists Navin and Pratima Doshi Make Yet Another Donation: LA Gets Doshi Center for Integrative Medicine


LOS ANGELES, Calif.
– In the midst of a global health crisis, the Maharishi International University opened the Doshi Center for Integrative Medicine here on the morning of May 14.
A $5 million donation in the form of a two-story building, in a prime locale on Sepulveda Boulevard in Los Angeles, by Indian American philanthropists Navin and Pratima Doshi had made this possible, announced Dr. John Hagelin, president of MIU, at an online event and a small in-person audience.
Well known in Southern California for their support of research and study of India and its traditions, for the Doshis, this marks one more in a series of donations to academic institutions. While the couple’s endowments support chairs on Indic systems and history at public and private schools like UCLA and Loyola Marymount, the new Doshi Center is envisaged to run as a clinic for treatment, training, and research on Ayurveda. ....

Yonkers man sentenced for holiday burglary spree around Westchester


Judge Barry Warhit sentenced Martinez in Westchester County Court on April 15. Martinez, 43, must also pay nearly $30,000 in restitution to the victims.
The Westchester County District Attorney s Office announced the sentencing on April 29. In addition to its investigators, the case included help from the police departments in Dobbs Ferry, Rye, Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown, White Plains, Yonkers and Westchester County.
Martinez pleaded guilty in November 2020 to first-degree robbery, two counts of first-degree burglary and six counts of second-degree burglary, all felonies.
Stefanie DeNise and Steven Vandervelden prosecuted the case.
Robert Schneider, the lawyer for Martinez during this case, had no comment on the sentencing. ....
