Shootout with officers detailed at Montgomery County hearing

CHRISTIANSBURG â Body camera footage played Friday in a Montgomery County court showed chaotic scenes as a manâs apparent attack on his wife turned into a shootout with three sheriffâs deputies.
Jammie Lee Duncan, 46, had a preliminary hearing in the countyâs Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court to sort through an array of charges from an incident that began June 11 at his residence in Riner. After hours of testimony, the playing of video recordings â and audio of a teenagerâs 911 call â and the repeated mapping of officerâs movements on printouts of a mobile homeâs floorplan, Judge Robert Viar sent nine felony charges on to a grand jury, which will decide if Duncan should be tried in Circuit Court. ....

General Assembly elects new judges, including successor to Roanoke judge who quietly left midterm

RICHMOND â The General Assembly elected new judges Tuesday to benches around the Roanoke Valley, including someone to fill a vacancy left by a Roanoke Juvenile and Domestic Relations District judge who recently and quietly stepped down.
Heather Ferguson will succeed John Weber III, who became a domestic court judge in 2015. His first term on the bench was due to extend through June, and his motivation for departing early has not been announced and remains unclear.
Judge Hilary Griffith, chief of Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court in the 23rd Judicial District, confirmed last week that Weber had left, but referred questions about his departure to the Virginia Supreme Courtâs executive secretary. That office did not immediately respond to messages left this week. ....
