The Weekend in Scraps: Cyborg Dominates, Badr Hari Returns, Deontay Wilder Wins Big Every Monday, the Combat Press staff gathers its thoughts on the previous weekend’s fights and fight news. This feature isn’t a recap and it isn’t an editorial, but rather a bit of both worlds. We’ll scour the best from the combat-sports landscape and deliver it, with some commentary, right here. Let’s get started… MMA Well, Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino sure is cleaning out the UFC women’s bantamweight division. It’s too bad that the Brazilian is a 145-pound fighter, though. While her victory over Yana Kunitskaya in the UFC 222 headliner was another impressive piece of work for the women’s MMA legend, it was one more defense against a fighter who typically competes a weight class below Cyborg’s featherweight division. Kunitskaya may have entered as the Invicta FC bantamweight queen, but she’s still no match for the likes of Cyborg. The Brazilian has very little c ....
MMA Fighting Share this story After taking out Dan Hooker at UFC 257, Michael Chandler became an instant title contender at 155 pounds. Will Brooks, one of the few fighters to definitively have Chandler’s number, was watching that performance. With respect to Chandler, he likes their chances if they fight again. The two former Bellator standouts first met at Bellator 120 on May 17, 2014, and it was Brooks who scored the upset victory via split decision to claim an interim lightweight title. An immediate rematch was booked six months later for Bellator 131, and the second time, Brooks finished Chandler with strikes in the fourth round. ....
Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC UFC Vegas 20: Rozenstruik vs. Gane is all wrapped up. And what looked to be a promising, high level card on paper, unfortunately turned into something of a slog. Ciryl Gane proved that he can fight a cautious, winning bout at a very high level but that’s hardly what anyone hoped to see when he was matched up with heavyweight KO artist Jairzinho Rozenstruik. Magomed Ankalaev, similarly, failed to thrill in the co-main but continued to look like a tough problem to solve at light heavyweight. So, is Gane getting rushed too far too fast as a headlining fighter, with only three years of pro MMA experience? Is Ankalaev primed for a top contender’s bout? And can Pedro Munhoz make his bid for contention off a big win over Jimmie Rivera? ....
Five Lightweight Prospects the UFC Should Sign in 2021 Welcome to year eight of the annual “Prospects the UFC Should Sign” series, in which we’ll examine five MMA prospects per division the UFC should sign in the upcoming year. This series started during my time as a writer for Bleacher Report, continued through my tenures at Today’s Knockout and FanSided, and now it stays alive another year here at Combat Press. Let’s examine the lightweight division, a weight class that is loaded with talent and is constantly providing fans with new top fighters. Advertisement In picking these prospects, I’ll try my hardest to stay away from fighters who are currently in top organizations, such as Bellator or the Professional Fighters League, but a couple may pop up. In the past, I’ve had some great picks on the list and some that haven’t worked out. Below are the previous year’s selections, followed by the five men the UFC should offer roster spots to in th ....
