HALIFAX The joint federal-provincial inquiry into the April 2020 tragedy in Nova Scotia made its first public presentation Thursday, and announced who will be participating in its proceedings. The Mass Casualty Commission is tasked with examining the events leading up to and including April 18 and 19, during which a gunman killed 22 people in over a 13-hour rampage throughout a number of Nova Scotia communities. In March, the Commission issued a call for applications from individuals and groups with direct interest in the subjects being examined by the inquiry. In a news release, the Commission says it received 60 applications for participation. In Thursday s virtual announcement, it released the names of individuals and organizations that will be part of the proceedings. ....
HALIFAX Less than a month after Canada s public safety minister announced decommissioned police cars would no longer be sold in surplus government auctions, similar vehicles are still for sale from the military. Surveillance video captured over 13 hours last April not only depicts Gabriel Wortman s movements, but why his violent rampage went on so long. With his fully functioning replica police car, Wortman was able to move relatively freely between communities, and he did at least for a time. When word got out that similar decommissioned cruisers were still being sold in surplus auctions, the feds moved to shut it down. ....
HALIFAX New information released by court order now reveals the types of firearms the perpetrator of Canada s worst mass murder had with him when he was shot and killed by RCMP after his 13-hour killing rampage. On the night of April 18, the killer set fire to several homes and killed 13 people in Portapique, N.S., before evading police later that night. Gabriel Wortman carried out his crimes while dressed as a Mountie and driving a vehicle made to look like an RCMP cruiser. He went on to kill nine more people at locations throughout Colchester County the next morning. One of the victims was pregnant when she was shot and killed in her vehicle. ....
