Panama City Beach Florida no longer small-town America due to tourism


According to the latest U.S. Census data, Panama City Beach has an estimated population of 12,583 far lower than nearby Panama City s estimated population of 34,667. However, when tourism season is in high gear, Panama City Beach s population swells exponentially. 
Along with boosting local businesses, one of the main ways tourists contribute to the community is through bed taxes, or lodging fees placed on short-term rentals. Those fees are redistributed throughout the community to help fund a variety of things, including beach renourishment projects, lifeguard programs and law enforcement agencies, Rowe said. 
Information provided by Visit PCB shows that the city received between $21 million and almost $26 million in bed taxes each of  the past three years.   ....

Looking east from City Pier the beach was well stocked with tourists Monday, April 19, 2021. Very few visitors are wearing masks when outside at the high volume tourist locations like Pier Park and the City Pier in Panama City Beach.
PANAMA CITY BEACH  Local officials agree that traffic is the No. 1 reason tourists sometimes annoy residents. 
However, visitors are still a crucial part of the local economy and the reason the Beach isn t like other places in small-town America, according to Dan Rowe, president and CEO of Visit Panama City Beach. ....

Denville fire: Man killed mother, set home on fire says prosecutor


A Denville man killed his mother and set their Indian Lakes section home on fire, authorities said.
Anthony Citro, 41, was charged with first-degree murder and arson after police and firefighters who responded to a fire on Monday found the remains of his mother inside the home they shared, authorities said.
Arriving at the scene on narrow, hilly Chestnut Hill Drive East, police found Citro outside the residence, with apparent blood on his clothing, said Morris County Prosecutor Robert Carroll.
The cause of death has been ruled homicide by the Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Carroll identified the victim as Eileen Citro, 68. He charged her son on Tuesday after the Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the manner of death was sharp force injuries and ruled it a homicide. ....
