Ivison: Federal budget criticism that will be hard for the Liberals to brush off

Article content
The reception that greeted last week’s federal budget from fiscal conservatives was predictable. If you agree with American tax reduction advocate Grover Norquist that government should be shrunk down to a size where it can be drowned in a bathtub, you probably didn’t appreciate a budget that will send federal net debt levels to $1.4 trillion within five years.
The Trudeau government can brush off such criticism as ideological and partisan. It will find it harder to discount the reaction from an officer of Parliament and from respected economists who have been allies and colleagues in the past. ....

Economy adds 303,000 jobs in March, unemployment rate falls, Statistics Canada says

OTTAWA
Canada s economy added more than 300,000 jobs in March, once again outpacing expectations and putting the labour market on track to recoup all that was lost one year ago even before a federal budget rolls out with its promise of billions in stimulus spending.
In all, Statistics Canada said the economy added 303,000 jobs in March as restrictions rolled back, paving the way for more workers to return to high-touch sectors hardest hit by public health restrictions.
Retail gained 95,000 jobs to fully recoup losses sustained in January lockdowns, while employment jumped 21,000 in the accommodation and food services sector.
Notable gains were also seen in health care, construction and educational services. That last gain was partially a result of Ontario, which led employment gains overall, moving its March break for schools to next week in a bid to slow the spread of COVID-19. ....

Mark Carney on Canada's economic growth: 'It's going to take more than one budget'

POLITICO
Mark Carney on Canada’s economic growth: ‘It’s going to take more than one budget’
“There were elements of growth in the balance from what I can see and understand,” Carney said in a long response that didn’t directly answer the question.
The assessment by Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of England and Bank of Canada, comes amid criticism that Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland’s budget last week lacks a robust post-pandemic growth plan.

Canada rolls out post-pandemic spending plan ahead of likely election

OTTAWA (REUTERS) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau s government on Monday (April 19) lined up billions in new spending to provide emergency support during a virulent third wave of Covid-19 and to help launch an economic recovery ahead of an election expected later this year.
The budget, the Liberal government s first in two years because of the pandemic, is aimed squarely at boosting near-term growth and includes a long-promised national daycare plan.
It also follows through on stimulus promised late last year, outlining a C$101.4 billion (S$107.66 billion) growth plan over three years, with nearly half of that spending coming in the first year. ....
