GREAT FALLS — On Saturday, June 26th, at Giant Springs State Park, the 2021 Summer Junior Ranger Program or children ages 8 to 12 began.
The program is a series of several hands-on learning events, each with a different topic, and related activities and games.
The programs are an hour and a half long each and will be held every other Saturday from June 26th through August 7th.
“During the program we talk about different features of the park, different features of recreation, and of course some of the natural processes that occur in our ecosystem,” said AmeriCorps member Kelly Hines. ....

Hundreds of Montana high school students working to halt knapweed

As spring s rains and warmer temperatures bring forth a new growth of grass to the Rocky Mountain Front, a more insidious plant is attempting to take over the landscape and push out the nutritious forbs and grasses that so much wildlife depends on.
Spotted knapweed has invaded large swaths of Montana s pastureland, open space and natural landscapes making them unsuitable for livestock and wildlife alike. Central Montana s high school students will soon be doing their part to fend off this noxious invader.
Near the end of May upward of 240 high school students from Great Falls and Simms will spend one of their final school days before the summer break pulling knapweed from trails and meadows west of Augusta and around Giant Springs State Park in Great Falls. The effort has been organized by Dan Wilkins, a retired high school teacher who spent 29 years teaching applied physics to students in the Great Falls School District. ....

FWP hosts guided bird watching hike in Giant Springs State Park


GREAT FALLS, Mont. - Park rangers and talented bird watchers came together Saturday as hundreds of different birds start flying north across Montana, inviting the public to see them in action. 
“You never know what you’re gonna find,” said Beth Hill, a bird watcher who’s been a part of the Upper Missouri Breaks Audubon Society (UMBA) since the early 1980s.  
With binoculars, scopes and cameras at the ready, birders like herself kept their eyes open for birds of all shapes and sizes in Giant Springs State Park.
“There are over 400 species of birds that can be found in Montana,” said Dave Hagengruber, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Park Region 4’s information and education manager. “Part of the fun about seeing some of these is knowing what they are, what species am I looking at and where are they coming from.”  ....

Great Falls bear sighting remains unconfirmed

State wildlife officials issued a brief news release Wednesday countering an earlier report of a bear sighted near an animal carcass in the area of Giant Springs State Park.
On the afternoon of Tuesday April 27, Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks investigated reports of a bear feeding on a carcass near the Sulphur Springs area of Giant Springs State Park, the news release states. The investigation found no evidence of a bear or a carcass.
The release came in response to several earlier media reports urging the public to avoid the area between Morony Dam and Sulphur Springs while FWP officials investigated an unattributed claim that a bear on a carcass had been sighted in the vicinity. ....
