The 1984 Mahesh Bhatt-directed drama revolved around an old couple who lends a room on rent after the death of their only son. Kher, who was 28-year-old when he starred in the film, portrayed the role of a retired middle-class teacher B V Pradhan who loses his son.

Soni, who was a part of the film, wrote a first-person account of what happened during that time and how was her experience of shooting the film. Talking to Bombay Times, she wrote, “Whenever I think of Saaransh there is a kind of warm feeling that I get. It was the first film of mine as a leading actress and for this reason alone I think I owe that memory a special mention. The best part about making this movie was the passion that the director had for his subject. That permeated down to every department of the film be it the writing, the actors, the set design, costumes, and then the editing.
