NEW DELHI As India confronts a devastating coronavirus outbreak where thousands are dying each day, the country desperately needs to vaccinate its population as soon as possible.
Yet the vaccine drive is stumbling just when it is most crucial.
Over the past six weeks, the number of vaccinations per day has fallen by about half, from a high of 4.2 million per day on April 2 to 2 million on Thursday. ....

10,000 cases a day in Punjab by third week likely

The number of Covid deaths has reached the 10,000-mark in Punjab, with the last 40 days accounting for around 33 per cent of the fatalities. It has taken a toll on the state with 45 per cent of the cases so far being reported in this period.
Experts say the state is yet to see the worst as the number of cases may hit 10,000 per day in the third week of May.
The first case of Covid was reported on March 8 last year and the first death was reported on March 18. In one year, till March 28, 2021, the state reported 2.31 lakh cases and 6,690 deaths. ....

Coronavirus: India is running out of COVID-19 vaccines, as second wave accelerates


In India, the world s biggest vaccine producer, millions of people are waiting for COVID-19 vaccines amid a devastating second wave of infections.
India typically produces more than 60 per cent of all vaccines sold globally, and is home to the Serum Institute of India (SII), the world s largest vaccine maker.
Its vast manufacturing capability is why the country signed on as a major player in COVAX, the global vaccine-sharing initiative that provides discounted or free doses for lower-income countries.
