The number of SC/ST and general category students seeking government scholarships for studying in schools and colleges in the twin cities reduced by more than 20% in the 2020-21 academic year compared to the previous session, an assement has revealed. These scholarships are meant for high school and college students from the economically weaker sections. Officials agreed that many parents from neighbouring districts, wary of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown last year, had preferred to send their children to nearby educational institutes instead of Noida and Greater Noida. ....

The district had announced its plans to start vaccination camps in highrise societies as part of its mega inoculation programme from July 1 and residents’ bodies had decided to hold free sessions with the government. But the programme was postponed after the district faced a shortage of doses in the last week of June. “We had spoken to officials about organising free inoculation camps and we were going to start those from July 5. But they are still facing a shortage of doses and the officials are not being able to confirm when they can start the drive. Noida: After RWAs chipped in to set up isolation wards during the second Covid-19 wave, they are now setting up vaccination camps in societies. In the past one month, the Noida Federation of Apartment Owners Associations (NOFAA), the common group for all AOAs in Noida, has organised 50 vaccination camps across several societies. NOFAA members said nearly 15,000 people have been inoculated at these camps that have been organised since May 27 in association with several private hospitals. “Highrise societies have very dense populations, and during the peak in April-May, fatalities due to Covid were very high. We realised that the only way out is to develop herd immunity as quickly as possible. That’s when we started organising camps in societies,” NOFAA secretary general Rajesh Sahay said. ....
