Clarksville City Council OKs Roxy purchase on final reading The Clarksville City Council agreed to buy the downtown Roxy Regional Theatre property Thursday night, with the long-term goal of transforming it into a full-fledged performing arts center. The decision marked what could prove to be another milestone moment in the redevelopment and resurgence of downtown adding a performing arts center as an anchor of it all, along with Montgomery County s multipurpose events center and various private retail projects. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – A resolution to make Juneteenth a recognized city holiday received resounding support from City Council members at an executive session meeting this week. The resolution would allow city employees to take a paid holiday each June 19. Ward 8 Councilwoman Wanda Allen, who wrote the resolution, said the city should join Montgomery County, which made Juneteenth a county holiday in summer 2020. “I would like to see this City Council go ahead and make Juneteenth a celebrated city holiday so we can show that we are the diverse city that we say we are and we accept people from all races, all shades, all genders, all everything. Let this be a day for celebration in our city,” Allen said at the meeting Thursday night. ....
Clarksville Now CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Clarksville’s City Council approved the purchase of the Roxy Regional Theatre by the city for $810,000 at a special session held Thursday evening, Dec. 17. In this first reading, the Council voted 10 yes’s to 0 no’s on the purchase. Councilmen Jeff Henley and Gary Norris abstained from voting, Norris being a non-voting member of the Roxy Board. Councilman Tim Chandler was absent from the session. “This was the natural next step in our view toward getting a new building on the corner of Franklin and First to give the Roxy a world-class theatre, and also to give the community a world-class event space,” said Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts. ....
