For some the guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial hasn’t provided the resolution they were hoping for. Rockford activists say they’re still reeling from the list of deadly encounters with the police since the death of George Floyd in their own back yard. For Leslie Rolfe, an activist with the May 30th Alliance, the guilty verdict hasn’t translated to improved police accountability in the city.
“In Rockford specifically, one of our biggest issues is that nobody knows about these things happening,” said Rolfe. “Whether it be inside of Rockford or [in]side of Winnebago county or outside, you know.” ....

May 30th Alliance spokesman Leslie Rolfe distributed booklets documenting the history of the Winnebago-Boone County Integrity Task Force. The assembled crowd then took to the streets, marching west along East State Street. Some carried signs while others chanted “No justice, no peace” and “Black lives matter.” The demonstrators crossed the Rock River and marched to the Winnebago County Administration Building on Elm Street, where they scrawled messages of protest on the sidewalk including “They can’t kill us all” and “We want justice.” ....

Justin Carner and a roasting partner launched the Velvet Robot brand in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 2017 when they saw a demand for cold brew at a local farmers market. They set up a booth and built a following for their cold brew before Carner in 2019 moved back to his home city of Rockford, splitting the business into two, and launched as a vendor at the Rockford City Market. ....
