St Xavier’s College, Calcutta, will conduct a Covid-19 vaccination camp in collaboration with the state government on its Park Street campus. It will also set up a safe home for Covid patients on its Raghabpur campus in South 24-Parganas. Senior officers of the district administration and state health department have already done a preliminary inspection at Raghabpur. On the Park Street campus, the vaccination will start with the college staff, teaching and non-teaching staff, alumni and then include others when the capacity increases, a college official said. The date and the eligibility criterion will be fixed based on the allotment of the vaccines and the number of doses, he added. ....
Jadavpur University has written to the state government with a proposal to turn its main hostel, behind Jadavpur police station, into a safe house for those who test positive for Covid-19. Vice-chancellor Suranjan Das wrote to health secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam on Thursday saying the government can use over 6,000 sq ft of space in the hostel comprising dining halls, dormitory, common space and playing arena as a safe house. The hostel and the campus have been shut since March last year as a precaution against Covid-19 and classes are being held on digital platforms. The decision to turn the ground floor of the hostel into a safe house facility was taken at a meeting that VC Das held virtually with teachers, officials and representatives from the students’ unions on Wednesday. ....
The St Xavier’s College Alumni Association, in collaboration with the college, has opened a Covid help desk on the campus to help families who have tested positive, especially those from economically weaker sections. The volunteers managing the help desk will arrange oxygen concentrators, oxygen cylinders, pulse oximeters, PPE kits, hand sanitisers and other essential commodities and provide the items to those unable to procure them. The help desk number that became operational on Wednesday is 7439955182. Father Dominic Savio, the principal of the college and the president of the alumni association, said: “We cannot remain quiet in this difficult situation and will have to engage ourselves in extending these services, as the main principle of our (Jesuit) education system is to act as men and women for others and this is the time to prove it.” ....
