Place North West | Supply shortfall boosts Miller's Oldham bid

Neil Tague
The housebuilder has set out plans for 50 homes south of Denbigh Drive in Crompton, within a borough that it said is delivering only 80% of its housing target.
Miller Homes plans to deliver three- and four-bedroom housing on a 7.9-acre agricultural plot, insert a new access point off Denbigh Drive, and add landscaping across the scheme.
The site, which sits to the south of the High Crompton housing area, is identified as “Other Open Protected Land” in Oldham’s adopted development plan: however, it also sits within the Cowlishaw draft housing allocation area included in the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework, this zone being proposed as capable of delivering 460 dwellings. ....

The location for 265 homes and a new link road in Saddleworth
Tweaks to controversial plans to build a new road and housing development in Oldham have been approved – despite part of the site now being classed as ‘ancient woodland’.
The borough’s planning committee has agreed to vary two conditions relating to the application to build a new multi-million pound link road and up to 265 homes on land off Knowls Lane.
The plans for the land in Springhead were initially refused in November 2018 but a second application was approved in July 2019.
A local campaign group Save Our Valleys raised more than £50,000 to launch a legal challenge against the decision, but a judge ruled against their bid for a judicial review in December last year. ....

A two-acre brownfield site in Heywood has been transformed following an £8m redevelopment.
Russell Homes built 42 two and three bedroom properties on the previously derelict site at the junction of Cedar Avenue and Claybank Street on land acquired from Rochdale Borough Council.
The site was identified for housing as part of the authority’s bid to help drive the regeneration of the area, and attracted funding from Homes England and regional housing association Onward Homes.
All the properties are now occupied, with many now belonging to first time buyers who have moved to the area from elsewhere in Heywood and the wider Rochdale borough. ....

Place North West | THING OF THE WEEK

PLINTH
… North West sculptors are being asked to submit designs for a piece of art to sit atop a plinth outside Liverpool’s grade two-listed parish church. The winning entry will replace Gail Dooley’s Tidal Shame, which depicts a ceramic gannet entangled by sea plastic and detritus collected on beaches across the UK and Merseyside. The new installation will be unveiled in July and occupy the plinth for 12 months. Bill Addy, chief executive of Liverpool BID Company,
said: “The Liverpool Plinth is a vital place for us to champion artists across the North of England, in a year when they need more support than ever before.” The application process is now open and will close on Friday 19 March.
