Farmers worried as Cyclone Yaas closes in on Odisha s coast | Bhubaneswar News

Government officials on their way to evacuate villagers at Baliapal in Balasore district on Monday BHUBANESWAR: Right from the Super Cyclone in 1999 to Amphan last year, cyclonic storms have hardly ever spared horticulture crops in the state. Trees bearing fruits such as mangoes, papayas, bananas, guavas, pineapples and others have always been the first to be knocked off by cyclones. When Phailin had hit the state in 2013, thousands of farmers had lost their trees and faced huge losses. More than 43,000 hectares of horticulture crops were damaged in three districts Ganjam, Puri and Khurda. Similarly, Cyclone Fani in 2019 and Amphan in 2020 had wreaked havoc by destrying both perennial and horticultural crops. While Fani had damaged crops spread over more than one lakh hectares of land, Amphan had done the same last year.
