Cites surging Covid-19 cases and low occupancy
Northern Zone of Indian Railways has decided to cancel 28 pairs of trains citing COVID-19 cases and surge in COVID-19, according to official note.
The trains are Shatabdis, Rajdhani Expresses, Jan Shatabdis and Vande Bharat – most of which are AC trains connecting Delhi with various parts of the country.
The Railways will stop services in a staggered manner starting from May 9, May 10 to May 14 till further orders.  Also, more trains are being cancelled from other zones of Indian Railways as well due to drop in occupancy, among others. The moves comes in the backdrop of several states and cities opting for different intensities of lockdown as different strains of COVID-19 virus spread across the country. ....

ISLAMABAD: As hospitals in Delhi and many other cities in India run out of beds, people have been forced to find ways to get treatment for sick patients at home. Many have turned to the black market, where prices of essential medicines, oxygen cylinders and concentrators have skyrocketed and questionable drugs are now proliferating.
On Monday, the country reported another 319, 435 infections and 2,764 deaths, with roughly 117 Indians succumbing to the disease every hour and experts say even those figures are likely an undercount. The new infections brought India’s total to more than 17.6 million, behind only the United States. ....

To deliver 150 tonnes of Oxygen to UP by Monday
The Indian Railways, which has carried 150 tonnes of liquid medical oxygen (LMO) so far to Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh with its Oxygen Express, will ferry another 145-150 tonnes to Lucknow.
Suneet Sharma, Railway Board Chairman and CEO, at a virtual press meet on Sunday, said: “We are also planning oxygen trains for Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi.” The Railways is expected to move four tankers from a Jindal plant in Raigarh for Delhi on Sunday night. ....

Amid a record surge in COVID-19 cases in the country, around 93,000 employees of Indian Railways have tested positive for the virus, Railway Board Chairman and CEO Suneet Sharma said on Friday.
“Railways is no different [from what is happening in the country]. Roughly around 93,000 Railways beneficiaries were infected with COVID-19. More than 5,000 beds are earmarked for these people in the 72 hospitals of the Indian Railways,” Mr. Sharma said during a press conference. ....
