MPD Starts New Plan to Get Guns Off the Streets

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed along with local, state, and federal law enforcement officials say they are doing everything they can to fight violent crime in the capital city. They announced the recent seizure of more than 100 guns taken off the streets in the last month alone.
Interim Police Chief Ramona Harris says all of the guns laid out on the table at the press release had been confiscated since June 25th and were used in violent crimes. Harris says most of the guns were stolen from registered gun owners who did not properly lock away their weapons.
Harris also announced that the FBI and the Montgomery County District Attorney will be working together with the police department to get even more guns off the streets in an effort to reduce violent crime in the city. Interim Chief Harris also advises gun owners to properly secure their firearms, whether in cars or in their own homes, to lessen the chance of them winding up in the hands of criminals who c ....

MPD Awarded 25 of its Officers with a Promotional Ceremony

The Montgomery Police Department celebrated their hardworking men and women with much deserved promotions. The MPD held a promotional ceremony for 25 of its officers at City Hall on Friday. Friends and family were able to attend the ceremony, which is the first time this has been able to happen since the Pandemic.
One of the promotions being awarded on Friday was the swearing in of Ramona Harris as the new Interim Chief of Police. Harris had this to say about the promotional ceremony, “It’s remarkable to just see them receive this and they’ve worked hard for all their career and they’ve definitely earned it, nothing was given away today. So, that’s one thing I’m excited to say, in like I said at the podium, just want an honor it is to be here to be the one given the congratulatory remarks at such an event. It’s overwhelming for so I’m excited about it.” ....

Former Alabama congressman Sonny Callahan dies at 88


Former U.S. Rep. Herbert Leon “Sonny” Callahan, who represented south Alabama in Congress for 18 years, died early Friday morning. He was 88 years old. 
Gov. Kay Ivey’s office announced Callahan s death on Friday. Ivey’s chief of staff, Jo Bonner, was an aide to Callahan and succeeded him after he retired. 
“Without question, Sonny’s service to Alabama and to America was unrivaled,” Ivey said in a statement. “He was one of South Alabama’s most beloved public servants, and his legacy of helping others stands out as just one of his many wonderful qualities.”
Callahan, a native of Mobile, served in the Navy and attended the University of Alabama before going to work in his family’s trucking and warehouse business, becoming president of the firm after his uncle’s death in 1964. He first won election to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1970 as a Democrat, serving two terms in that chamber before winning a term in the Alabama Senate in 1978. ....
