Sheriff Timothy Soignet tells KATC they ve been in the water since day one, initially assisting the Coast Guard. Sheriff Soignet says, It can get pretty rough out there on the water. For that reason, his marine division has been working with the volunteers to keep them safe, answer questions and establish locations that have been cleared by patrols. ....
Gathering at a trailhead off Alligator Alley Saturday morning, about 40 people stood in a large circle, heads bowed. They were listening to Betty Osceola, an elder with the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians, give a prayer near the southern end of the Florida Trail. The group was about to embark on a southbound hike, following a marked trail through wet prairies, pinewood flats and dwarf cypresses. The journey, about four miles in and four miles back, is an effort to inform and educate the public on Burnett Oil Co.’s permits to begin exploratory drilling in Big Cypress National Preserve. The company filed four applications with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection on Jan. 22 to begin constructing the pads in one of the nation’s first national preserves. The company previously undertook seismic exploration projects in the preserve in 2017 prompting a legal battle the oil company ultimately won. ....
Updated March 10 In the summer, Sauvie Island is Portland s favorite rural retreat. Situated just 10 miles north of the city proper, it s an easy getaway for beachgoers particularly those looking to lounge in the buff and u-pickers hoping to score some fresh produce. Even at its most crowded, the vibe is still bucolic and sleepy. In the winter months, though, the island gets even sleepier. The beaches and hiking trails are pretty much empty, and there s no line of traffic searching for parking spots. Sure, there s a bit less to do even the most dedicated exhibitionist will think twice about stripping down and frolicking in the Columbia when it s 45 degrees and drizzly. But there s still winter bird watching: There are 250 bird species that can be seen on the island throughout the year, and in late winter, there s still a chance to catch sandhill cranes before they migrate north. ....

A Texas company conducting controversial oil exploration in the Big Cypress National Preserve wants to expand operations and hopes to start drilling by 2022. According to applications submitted to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection last week, Burnett Oil Co. has asked to construct two new roads and drilling pads about a mile east of Raccoon Point one of two drilling sites constructed in the 1970s and south of Interstate 75. The work would cover more than 30 acres. ....
