.- As the ash from Mount Vesuvius began to rain down on Pompeii in AD 79, the people of the city were engaged in two of their most important daily activities: eating and drinking. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco host Last Supper in Pompeii: From the Table to the Grave, the first exhibition to focus on the love of food and drink in Pompeii. The original exhibition, organized by the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, has been adapted and expanded for a California audience and brings to San Francisco a treasure trove of about 150 objects, including magnificent Roman sculpture, mosaics, and frescoes; household furnishings and tableware; objects of precious materials; and more, with many of these wondrous pi ....

LIFE IS DRAG Offers Live Pop-up Performance At The Cell

Nancy Manocherian s the cell theatre (Artistic Director Kira Simring) will host in-person street-side performances featuring the performers captured in Rachel Rampleman s exhibit LIFE IS DRAG. On Saturday March 13 at 5:00 PM Darlinda Just Darlindaand Mimi Silk will perform in the windows of the cell s space on 23rd street. The performance is free of charge however tips and donations are greatly appreciated. Masks are required and audiences are asked to maintain social distancing practices from other members throughout the length of the pop-up performance. The exhibition will extend hours until 7PM on March 13 only and will be available to view on the cell s third floor Gallery. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with the performers during gallery hours prior to the performance. ....

Steve Sherlock, Highways England s archaeology lead for the roadwork project says that images of the phallus and milling were inter-related for the Romans, “This millstone is important as it adds to the evidence for such images from Roman Britain” Sherlock said, “There were known associations between images of the phallus and milling, such as those found above the bakeries of Pompeii, one inscribed with Hic habitat felicitas - You will find happiness here.’”

Rarely does L.P. Hartley’s dictum that “the past is a foreign country” hold more firmly than in the area of sexuality in classical art. Classic erotic art, erotic images and depictions of genitalia, the phallus in particular, were incredibly popular motifs across a wide range of media in ancient Greece and Rome.
Simply put, sex is everywhere in Greek and Roman art. Explicit sexual representations were common on Athenian black-figure and red-figure vases of the sixth and fifth centuries BC. They are often eye-openingly confronting in nature.
