New Brunswick's isolation hotel program under review with calls to scrap it entirely

SAINT JOHN, N.B.
As officials meet this weekend to review New Brunswick’s isolation hotel program, one opposition leader is calling for it to be eliminated.
“I know what I would like to see, to have the program scrapped and go back to what we were doing before,” says People’s Alliance leader Kris Austin.
Austin says the program, meant to prevent the spread of new COVID-19 variants, isn’t necessary because only a small parentage of travellers disobey quarantine orders.
Austin says having additional home check-ins by enforcement officers would address concerns about travellers skipping isolation.
The meetings being held this weekend are typical for any type of crisis initiative according to the Canadian Red Cross, a partner in the program. ....

N.B. isolation hotel exemptions being given to those promising no contact

SAINT JOHN, N.B.
It appears the New Brunswick government is granting more exemptions to its isolation hotel regulations.
Several travellers who’ve spoken to CTV since the restrictions came into effect say they’ve been given approval to isolate at home.
New exemption rules came into effect May 1, with the province telling travellers they may be eligible for an exemption if they can ensure they’ll be at a location with no contact with anybody else for 14 days.
The province says the location is required to have its very own entrance, bathroom, and kitchen area, along with its own circulating air or heating system. Those isolating away from a hotel will be visited by a provincial agent within the first two days of their isolation, with a COVID-19 test required on the fifth and tenth day. ....

Changes to N.B.'s hotel quarantine rules have some travellers confused

MONCTON, N.B.
It’s been a confusing few days for some travellers entering New Brunswick.
The province has introduced an option for exemption from hotel isolation, but says those exemptions will be granted on a ‘case-by-case’ basis.
Kelly Laing and her partner were on their way home from travelling to Ontario for her grandmother’s funeral, when they found out at the 11th hour that they could isolate at home.
“Saturday, on our return, we were just passing through Kingston, Ontario, and luckily enough a friend of mine sent me a press release that said that if you could stay at home, and had the means to stay at home, contact the travel registration. They may approve you to stay in your own residence,” recalls Laing. ....
