Gainesville residents seek work as unemployment benefits set to end

Our booths have been full of people who are looking for work,” said Phyllis Marty, chief executive officer of the agency that helps people in Alachua and Bradford counties find jobs and employers find workers.
But a UF business professor says he suspects that many of these people are switching careers and avoiding going back into the low-paying, high-stress jobs, many of which have gone unfilled during the pandemic.
Now is a good time to find a job, with plenty of openings and companies in many cases offering better pay and benefits than before the pandemic, Marty said.
For example, McDonald’s jobs that paid $8 an hour before the pandemic now pay $12, she said. Nordstrom Distribution Center in Gainesville is offering entry-level jobs at $18 an hour with benefits. ....

Ocala/Marion thrilled with Lockheed Martin apprentice program

About 15 years ago, Marion County’s healthy economy was fueled by mostly service industry jobs. When the national recession struck in 2008, the local unemployment rate soared into double digits, and at one point was among the Top 5 highest in the nation.
Marion County officials, including state Rep. Stan McClain, who was a Marion County commissioner back in 2008, said the board vowed to diversify the local workforce before the next national recession, or other crisis, came to town.
Flash forward to today, and the job market in Marion is much more diversified. The community has more manufacturing and logistics jobs. That workforce diversity means Marion’s economy faired much better during COVID-19 pandemic. ....
