SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Tuesday, community leaders called attention to concerns over the death rate in San Diego County jails.
Yusef Miller with the North County Equity and Justice Coalition told ABC 10News, âWe have the highest in-custody death rate in the state compared to other counties our size.â Standing outside of the Las Colinas women s jail in Santee, they asked for further investigation.
GeneviÃ©ve Jones-Wright with Community Advocates for Just and Moral Governance added, âWe strongly request the support for a state audit because up until now there has been no accountability [and] no transparency.â ....

Activists in San Diego said the judge s sentence of 22.5 years for former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin appeared to be fair but not nearly enough.

SAN DIEGO Rev. Shane Harris said he spoke to George Floyd s cousin Gary Jones, a U.S. Navy sailor stationed in San Diego about how he felt about the sentencing of Derek Chauvin.
“The family feels, and I know particularly with Gary, they really wanted to see some level of sentencing that was reasonable and 22 1/2 years is a long enough time for someone like Derek Chauvin to sit in a cell, and think about what he has done. There is some level of closure, it is obvious that it is not at the level they would want it to be,” said Shane Harris, activist and CEO of People s Association of Justice Advocates. ....

Man who brought tortillas to Coronado game apologizes

The man who brought tortillas to the Saturday night Coronado High School basketball game against Escondido’s Orange Glen High issued a public apology Thursday, saying he realizes the act of throwing tortillas has been perceived as racially insensitive.
Luke Serna, who says he is half-Mexican and a registered Democrat, on Wednesday said he gave bags of tortillas to Coronado students. During an altercation following the game, some Coronado players threw tortillas in the air toward the Orange Glen team, which is mostly Latino.
Serna issued a statement Thursday.
“I realize the tortilla throwing has been perceived as racially insensitive,” Serna wrote. “I do not condone racially insensitive behavior, and that was not my intent. I apologize to all who were hurt by this and hope it can be a teaching moment for us all to become more conscious.” ....
