Center for Biological Diversity: SAN FRANCISCO Environmental groups sued the Interior Department, U.S. Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today for authorizing damaging activities in the California Desert Conservation Area, including a vast network of off-road vehicle routes in the West Mojave Desert. The routes are driving desert tortoises and other threatened and endangered species closer to extinction and destroying these protected public lands.

The Colorado River is flowing again in its delta. This is a big deal for a river that has not flowed through its delta in most years since the 1960s, resulting in an ecosystem that is severely desiccated and devastated.
Thanks to commitments from the United States and Mexico in the Colorado River binational agreement Minute 323 – 35,000 acre-feet of water (11.4 billion gallons) dedicated to create environmental benefits will be delivered to the river from May 1 to October 11. The expectation is that this will create and support habitat for birds like the Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Yuma Ridgway’s Rail, and Vermilion Flycatcher, and give life to the many plants and animals in this ribbon oasis of green in the midst of the Sonoran Desert.

BLM to conduct prescribed fire at Dos Palmas Preserve in Riverside County
MORENO VALLEY, Calif. – Fire crews from the Bureau of Land Management and cooperating agencies will conduct a prescribed fire in the Dos Palmas Preserve over the course of one day between Jan. 4 and 15, 2021. The prescribed fire will only be ignited under specific weather conditions which will allow for safe and successful burning and smoke dispersion. Smoke may be visible from the community of North Shore and Highway 111 during ignitions, which will occur between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
“The prescribed fire is part of an ongoing effort to maintain the preserve’s important marshland habitat in a healthy condition,” said Chelsea Collins, Dos Palmas Preserve Manager. “The burn will treat 25 acres of habitat for the Yuma Ridgway’s rail species and is designed to maintain suitable marshland habitat for the endangered bird.”

The water rights held by the Colorado River Indian Tribes are a valuable asset, and tribal leadership is seeking congressional approval to cash in on them for the benefit of the tribes and the state’s high-growth cities and maybe the environment.
