Inside a 40-foot shipping container parked in the Dutch town of Wageningen, the global base for Unilever’s food and refreshment business, there will soon be a fully functioning production line for the consumer goods company’s liquid bouillon. By making the product in a shrunken-down space, the company hopes to reduce its carbon footprint, produce less waste, and eventually be able to ship these nano-factories to new spots around the world so they can take advantage of local ingredients.

Unilever already has more than 300 factories across the globe, but they are large facilities designed to produce mass quantities. Sometimes the company needs to make smaller batches of products for items that are in season or when testing a new item, says Olivera Trifunovic, Unilever engineering manager and project lead of the travel factory. ....

Unilever tests nano factory: 'This trial is assessing a de-centralised production model'

Unilever tests nano factory: ‘This trial is assessing a de-centralised production model’
Unilever is trialling its first ‘nano factory’, which operates within a 40 foot sea container to deliver flexible production lines that can be moved all over the world. “This trial is assessing a de-centralised production model,” one of the engineers behind the innovation tells FoodNavigator.
Unilever operates more than 300 factories across 69 countries. These large-scale facilities are designed to manufacture products in large quantities, at high speed.
But what happens when the company needs to produce smaller volumes, perhaps to test a market before a full-scale launch? Often, it isn’t commercially viable to use a mass production line as switchover is a time-consuming process. ....

Unilever trials portable 'travel factories'

Unilever trials portable ‘travel factories’
Unilever has unveiled a portable ‘travel factory’ that operates inside a 40ft (12 meter) sea container, able to be moved all over the world.
Currently being trialed in Wageningen, The Netherlands, the digital factory produces liquid bouillon for Unilever’s Food Solutions business, with the possibility to expand production to ketchup, mayonnaise and ice cream in the future.
The travel factory can be shipped worldwide, allowing producers to localise production and respond quicker to changing demand in local markets. Producers can also use the factory to produce small volumes for product trials, freeing up mass production lines. ....

Engineers Build Mini Food Factory in Shipping Container

A team of engineers from Unilever designed the “nano factory” to agilely produce small batches of products.
A supply chain team led by two female engineers at Unilever have successfully designed and produced a functional mini food production line inside of a 40’ shipping container, the company announced this week. The “nano factory” is intended to allow the company to swiftly and agilely respond to changes in the market with new production capabilities for small trial batches or seasonal variants.
The line inside the container includes all steps in the production process, including receiving raw materials and bottling, capping and labeling. Unilever’s “nano factory” system can be transported to a production location on a truck to temporarily increase the site’s capacity. It requires only an electric cable and water line to operate. ....
