CAHOOTS Bill in House COVID-19 Relief Package

Surrounded by CAHOOTS staff and local and state politicians, Sen. Ron Wyden announced he had re-introduced a mental health bill that would increase federal money for social services like the Eugene agency around the country. For Wyden, the work that CAHOOTS does is personal.
“My brother was schizophrenic,” Wyden said at the Feb. 19 event. “In our family, night after night after night, year after year after year, we went to bed worried that my brother, Jeff, was going to hurt himself or hurt somebody else.”
Wyden’s brother’s schizophrenia, he added, is what sparked his interest in addressing the U.S.’s mental health system.  ....

Kristi Ann Schmidt: 1973-2021

Kristi Ann Schmidt was found dead Feb. 6 at a motel in Springfield at the age of 47.
Born March 13, 1973, in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, Schmidt was a big fan of the Green Bay Packers and the Oregon Ducks, said her stepfather, John Hall. “Visiting Lambeau Field in Green Bay was a highlight of her life,” he said.
Schmidt worked various jobs in Eugene and Springfield. In recent years she struggled with personal issues, a friend said, and most recently lived at the Eugene Mission.
“In today’s society our mental health programs are not what they need to be, or this wouldn’t have happened,” said her son, Eddie Cramer. ....

Bell, let's talk about #colonialism, #racism and #ableism

For more than a decade, the “Bell Let’s Talk” campaign has aimed to reduce stigma and increase conversations surrounding mental illness. On “Let’s Talk Day” Jan. 28 this year Bell promotes participation in a national conversation about mental health, committing to donate five cents for every eligible social media or telecommunications interaction that mentions #BellLetsTalk.
While the campaign may help raise awareness, a study by University of Windsor communication studies graduate Jasmine Vido suggests it may be more about marketing than mental health.
Bell Let’s Talk will be held on Jan. 28.
Critics have further called out the campaign’s inattention to structural and systemic factors that affect mental health, such as racial and colonial violence. Across these critiques, one theme is consistent: people with mental illness don’t need more talk. What, then, is needed? ....

Beings of Oregon: H.E.L.P for pets on the street

In gratitude, Pro-Bone-O presented Joyner with the “Volunteer of the Year Award” last year, streaming the presentation live on its Facebook page, according to board member Catrina Mathewson.
Before the pandemic, the clinic met clients on the second and fourth Sundays of each month in a warehouse at the Eugene Mission. That all came to a grinding halt with the COVID-19 shutdown.
With Pro-Bone-O clinics on hold, Joyner went back to worrying about his day job as an in-home care provider, but as he drove around town he would cross paths with former clients and yearned to help them if he could.  ....

Eugene Mission Quarantines Guests With COVID-19

Sheryl Balthrop is Executive Director of the Eugene Mission. She said they held a campus-wide testing and found one staff member and 68 male guests with positive results. Balthrop said the guests are remaining at the Mission in quarantine. The non-profit provides short-term shelter for people who are unhoused.
“And it’s not just the sheltering piece,” Balthrop said. “It’s the good nutrition. It’s caring people that are around them that will urge them to get that early intervention. So, we believe it’s very important these folks are not out on their own and that there are people that are around and can get them the help they need.” ....
