Whitehorse Daily Star: Government questioned on students' return to classes


The Yukon government’s sudden decision to send local high school students back to full-time classes in April was the source of some intense debate Wednesday in the legislature.
During question period, the government and Premier Sandy Silver were grilled on the decision by Yukon Party MLAs.
Scott Kent, the education critic for the YP, was particularly pointed in his questions.
“As we have said, A Path Forward, which the Liberals released just five days ago, says that, in order to get students back to full-time class in
person in Whitehorse, we need to meet a criteria of and I’ll quote again: ‘High overall vaccination rate for the entire Yukon population.’ ....

In a change of philosophy, the Yukon government and territorial health officials are moving to loosen the pandemic health restrictions that so many people have been chafing under.
Premier Sandy Silver and Dr. Brendan Hanley, the chief medical officer of health, announced this morning during the weekly COVID-19 briefing
that Grades 10-12 high school students in Whitehorse will be returning to full-time studies in April.
The two men also mentioned further relaxations of the health measures could be in the offing – possibly including expansions of social bubbles
and the re-establishment of travel bubbles outside the territory.
Both Silver and Hanley expressed puzzlement that anyone would call the decisions an “about-face” and major change in direction from what they ....

Advocates in Yukon say changes in eligibility for special education programming will leave some students behind and compromise their futures.
In a December letter to the premier, four advocate groups in the territory say 138 students are being moved from individualized education plans (IEPs) to student learning plans shifting the responsibility for guaranteeing support for those students from the Department of Education to individual schools and teachers. ....
